What A Day

Filed under: Uncategorized — Vanessa @ 3:30 pm

One year ago, today, we walked into The Children’s Hospital.  We didn’t leave for 19 weeks.

I have lots of thoughts and feelings to share but (as usual) no time to do it right now.

I did want to give you an update from our two appointments today, though.

Appointment with the surgeon – he just went over everything we’d talked about with the fellow last week (remember our attending was out of town).  We decided to do the surgery next Monday, October 11th.  He’ll do a thoracotomy (through the same incision he made last April), drain the air out of the cyst that’s in his lung, then stitch up any leaky airways and spray his lung with this powerdy material that causes it to form scar tissue and prevent any future air leaks.  (Thoracotomy with pleurodesis, to be exact)

Appointment with the oncologist – to my surprise we didn’t even discuss the whole prophylactic antibiotic thing that I’d mentioned in my last post.  She said she (and the entire team of oncologists) had looked over his ct scans decided they didn’t think there were any areas of active fungal infection (praise the Lord!).  AND, even though the infectious disease doctor wants us to remain on the iv antifungal medication, all of the hem/onc doctors agree that we can stop it.  Did you hear that?  Stop the iv antifungal that he’s been on for 49 weeks!  I was shocked.  I’m still shocked.  Totally not what I was expecting from that appointment.  They felt like all of the bacterial line infections he’s been getting lately are a greater risk right now than the (hopefully eliminated) fungal infection is.  He’ll still take an oral antifungal every day and we’re praying that that will be enough to keep the fungal infection away.

God is so good.  I have more to write later.  Thank you so much for continuing to pray with us!
