PICU

Filed under: Uncategorized — Vanessa @ 2:37 pm

We’re finally settled into the PICU.  We spent forever in the recovery room waiting on a pump for a morphine drip and for another pump so that he could get blood.

The surgeon said that when he went in with the camera it took him about 30 minutes to figure out what he was looking at.  He said “it looked like a bomb when off and there were no street signs left.”  Awesome.  Always something you want to hear about your son’s anatomy.  They decided that they weren’t going to be able to get to it with the VATS and that they were going to need to open him up.

He told us he *thinks* he got all of the infected area.  They did have to remove part of his lung (but not the entire lobe).  He said that he could see open airways that he had to stitch closed.  The area of infection was more in his lung than it was the chest cavity (which was not what we were hoping for).  The part of the lung that remains looks “crappy” but the doctor is hopeful that it can start to heal now.
He’s got a pretty good sized incision on his left side (where they had to go in and spread the ribs) and he’s also got a chest tube hooked up to suction.
Sorry that the update is so scattered.
Praises:
– he’s came out of surgery OFF the vent!  thank you Lord!
– the doctor thinks he got all of the infected area
– his pain is under control
Prayer Requests:
– that they actually did get all of the infected area
– that we will be able to manage his pain
– that the chest tube can come out soon

  1. Got you covered, what this little boy has gone through reminds me of my sister and all of the good and bad things that go along with cancer treatment… One thing that I will say is my sister has battled this thing called cancer since she was six years old and she is 42 now, she has had some setbacks but has always come out on top by God’s Grace and love… Hang in there Brock and know that many, many, many people are praying for you and your family…

  2. I am so thankful to hear things went well…maybe not as smooth as hoped but good nonetheless. I am curious how they will they know whether they got it all since they had to open him up in the first place to see it? I think I’m just going to keep praying that they got it all and let God handle the rest. Praying for a peaceful afternoon and night.

    • we asked the surgeon the exact some question about 15 minutes ago. honestly, there’s not a great way to know. he said we’ll do another ct scan in a month or so to compare it to all the others. looking at his white blood count and fevers (or hopefully lack thereof) can also be an indicator.

I just wanted to say that I am continuing to pray daily for Brock and your family. I read every update and pray specifically for his needs. So glad to hear that he is off the vent and that the surgery went good. Tonight I pray Brock gets some rest, that he will feel no pain and that he will begin to heal quickly!
